We have a small microwave, and it will easily fit above the range. My question is how to mount it. It's not as wide as the opening above the range. SHould I mount a shelf above range, then just place the microwave on top of that? What will that do to ventilation?

The_New_Mrs._G,

It sounds like you have a countertop (table) model.

You could mount this on a premanufactured "microwave shelf" that is available in 24 and 30 width(s).

Even though an exhaust fan is not required, have you given thought to using one and if you currently have an exhaust fan now,

1. Will the new microwave shelf be in the way of current venting?

2. Will the microwave be too high for those to use properly and safely?

Just some thoughts

Another thing to consider is that countertop microwaves aren't designed for the heat they would be exposed to when installed over the range. Most (if not all, AFAIK) over the range models have heat sensors that will run the fan to keep the internals of the microwave cool, regardless of whether the microwave is in use or not.

Even if you put it on a shelf, it will still get the heat rising from the stove (And so will the shelf).
