Is there a code stating that all bathrooms must have a exhaust fan? If the bathroom has a window (in the shower area), is that sufficient enough for ventilation?

thx, Don

dmestan,

The Code says that even if you have a window, a bathroom exhaust fan must still be installed. There is no choice. What pgtek mentioned is not totally accurate but please confirm with your local building official.

Hope this helps!

My brother got a variance on this particular code. It was only a half bath tho. We didn't think it needed a fan but the inspector red tagged it(This was AFTER all drywall was up, inspector missed it first time round') After a brief conversation he just gave us a variance on it since there was no tub/shower. As for your own situation, you definately want to put that fan in there. I had a window only vent for a long time and it didn't do squat. Paint above the shower peeled away. Installed an exhaust fan an voila! no more paint peel.....

just curious, why is it code to have a fan in a half bath? Doesn't make sense to me:confused::confused:

good luck
