The attic in the home I just purchased has about 5 inches of blown-in insulation. I plan to add the pink roll-out kind as an extra layer (with no vapor barrier). Do you basically just roll it out from eve to eve and leave it, with the exception of leaving space for the soffit vents?

You are correct. Just make sure the insulation you buy is unfaced.
