I have an OLD Gibson DH 1860 dehumidifier that has been working fine, but when I went over to check on it as it was supposed to be drying out a wet basement, I discovered that it had iced up the coils in the front of the unit to the point that the fan was hitting the ice. When this happens with my house AC unit, its usually because the freon level has dropped. I notice that this unit has a shrader valve on it next to the compressor unit. It is possible to have this recharged? Would I need an HVAC guy to do it? Is a unit that is probably 40 years old even worth it?

That old it would be freon R12 I think and that is a no no for sure. Might see if some hvac guy will just take it off your hands to just recover the freon out of it . so it can be cut apart.

The guy who converted my Auto AC over from R12 to the New R(134)? just had to change the valve. This couldnt be done here?

You could try but I think your unit there works on a cap tube like a fridge. Not on a TXV valve

Youre exactly right. Does anyone ever recharge refrigerators?

If you mean new yes they all come with R 134 in them. But not the old ones with R12.
