I'm planning a kitchen remodel and there is a large chimney enclosure that runs through the kitchen (30 x 20) that we would like to reduce. The masonry chimney in the basement below measures 22 x 18. It vents a gas furnace only. Can we take down the masonry chimney and replace it with a metal flue and box that in at the kitchen level? About what size would a flue and the minimum framing around it be? Will we save much space by doing this? Will we need to insulate the pipe when it goes through the attic? The house is one-story plus the basement and attic. Thanks.

Yes you sure can. You dont say what all is on the flue as for as the BTU size. You want a class B gas vent pipe and run it from the basement up and out the roof. You only have to stay from wood 1" on all of this pipe so you can box it right in. dont have book here. go to hart & cooley www and check out just what size pipe you need
And no you dont have to put insulation on the pipe
You want class B gas vent pipe.
