I hope this is not a repeat request. The first attempt went awry. I am the designated "plaster repair person" of the ceilings in a large colonial dream house built during the French\Indian war (the oldest section) and around the Civil War era (1860)-the add-on section.
There is much to be done, but we are fortunate to be DYI people.
Maybe someone could suggest an instructional book or video tape to use as a guide. All "hands on" information would of course be welcomed too. Thanks. raybo.

If you want to be historically acurate first do a search for "Preservation Briefs". This won't tell you too much how to do the work but will help you identify the appropriate materials. It has a lot of good advice as well. Look for the one on "Restoring Historic Flat Plaster" I think it's #21 or 22.
If this is more than cosmetic you should use a plasterer. Watch him carefully and learn for the next time.
