I Bought this house about 3 years ago and it has a MacClean water softener which was not being used by the previous owners. They had it on "bypass". I left it on bypass because the water didn't seem to be very hard when showering etc. After being in the house for awhile we noticed that our facecloths were turning blue green and the shower stall was getting the same staining in it. The staining on the facecloths seems to be coming from the hot water faucets much more then the cold water. The house is supplied with well water and also has copper plumbing which I am sure is contributing to the stain. I finally decided to put the water softener into operation to see if it would have any effect on the staining.I first flushed it out good with clorox and water and then adding salt to the brine tank. It has been working well and the water is soft when washing and showering. It seems to have some slight effect on the staining but we still have the problem. What do I need to do to solve this problem and where do I start? Usually a water test is the first thing and I would like to know what type of test kit to buy and what I need to test for? Any other advice is most welcome.

The problem is, you have a low pH. You can correct this several different ways. How to treat it will depend on how low of a pH you have. I would recommend getting a pH test kit like for a pool to start. Or you can take it down to your local pool supplier and have them test it. Once you do that comae back and post the results and I, Gary, or someone else can make a recommendation for you.

Sorry for the delay in getting back with PH results. I have tested it twice using test strips and come up with a PH of 4.5

I, too, would appreciate good advice on correcting my low pH. Mine recently tested at 5.1, and I'm also dealing with the blue/green stains, etc.

Anyone?

Thanks in advance!
