I have a Nathan teak bureau to which I've (foolishly) started to repair some scratches using 00000 steel wool. However when I tried to restain the unit the results were not as expected.

1. Areas where I have removed the scratches (i.e. worked harder) are coming out much darker and are very obvious.
2. In other areas the grain is also showing up very darkly (like black specs)
3. The overall colouring is nothing like the rest of my Nathan furniture which is a lovely teak (slightly orangy) colour. This stain seems to have gone a lot grayer.

Have I just ruined this piece of furniture or is the situation recoverable - if only I knew what I was doing?

thnx Martin

Contact the manufacturer to see if they will sell you some of their stain and finish. Wood will have to be sanded down to bare wood. Do not use steel wood as particles can rust. You start with a 180 grit and move on to 320 grit.

If in doubt, hire a professional.
