Anyone know why my gas fireplace would all of a sudden go out? This has been happening lately just after I flip the start switch. After 1 to 2 minutes of burning it suddenly goes out. If I turn it off, then back on again it usually stays lit. One time I didn't notice it went out until I woke up the next morning to find it lit. So apparently it came back on by itself too!

Hello,

I am assuming this is a vent free unit? If so the problem is probably a dirty pilot assembly. The main drawback to vent-free units is the tolerances are so tight that a small amount of dust or dirt can cause this type of problem. The pilots are actually designed to lift off the burner and put themselves out as a safety if the combustion efficiency is not 100% so that no CO2 is created due to the disrupted efficiency. I would try blowing out the pilot assembly with compressed air, and if it has any air intake holes in the pilot cylinder try a pipe cleaner or small brush to run through the holes as well. This typically solves the problem you are having (even if it's not vent free, but not as common). Contact me if the problem persists after trying this.

Good Luck!
