A friend of mine used joint compound and a putty knife to get a plaster like finish on her bathroom walls. Perhaps it was her technique, but her wall looks pretty good. In my attempt to also save money, I also applied the joint compound to try to look like plaster. My bathroom walls look horrid! The walls look as if I tried to save money, obviously did the job myself, and with poor quality materials. What can I do to remove the layers of joint compound and begin again? HELP!

I think your trouble lies in the size putty knife you used. (just a guess)
I have much better success with a trowel and I prefer a swimming pool trowel because of the rounded edges. (the square edges always dig in)
You will have to scrape as much off as you can and then sand and sand and sand till you have a smooth work surface again. don't put it on too thick.
You are just adding texture not replastering the wall.

Probably right to start over. But don't judge too harshly before you've got some paint on it. Until then, it certainly will look fake and cheap and like you did it - these are all true.

and when you're ready to start again, ask your friend to come over & walk you through it! or at least ask her to tell you detailed step by step directions. (and borrow HER putty knife!!) better than us trying to guess what she did. and then treat her to dinner! :)
