We have/had light oak kitchen cabinets that have a clear finish on them. I wanted to darken them to a warmer looking oak. We used minwax polyshade and now they look fake and uneven. I think we used too many coats. What can we do to fix them? Can we sand them to even them out? We are trying to avoid stripping. We have only done one bank of cabinets so far, until we can figure out what to do to correct the problem.

Well, I know you're not going to want to hear this, but you need to strip them.

Polyshades is stain and polyurathane all in one. "Good concept, but bad results".

While people think they're saving time, they're really not and it's not going to look anywhere near as good as if you were to stain it then seal it with a finish.

I used polyshades one time in Highschool about 14 years ago and I'll never use it again.
