We are building a custom built-in computer desk in our den/guest room out of maple wood. I am trying to determine what to use for the desktop. Should we make the desktop out of the maple or should we use a laminate? This desk will be floor to ceiling upon completion. Thanks.

If you're making a floor to ceiling unit, then I'd say go for the gold and do it in wood. Be sure to pick a durable oil based finish, especially for the top, since that will get the most abuse.

Be sure to use Minwax pre-conditioner on maple.

I agree, laminate will chip very fast. Wood can easily be sanded and refinished.

Just a thought.. Would you want to add a clear coat verathane to the top? For xtra protection?
