Help! :alarm:

Our brand new microfiber loveseat & sofa were custom ordered in a cinnamon color (and look fantastic!). We've only had them for two weeks and have started to notice significant color transfer/bleeding from both pieces onto our clothes.

We didn't pay for the store where we purchased the sofas to scotch guard since they admitted it was just done in their back room and not the manufacturer. Would scotch guarding make a difference?

I have to wait for the store to open today to call and speak with a manager, but wondered if anyone else has had a similar problem, and if so, how have they resolved the issue.

Thanks in advance!

i haven't ever heard of that, or of any kind of upholstery fabric bleeding onto a person's clothes! that's certainly completely unacceptable and obviously a fabric defect. i wouldn't settle for anything less than replacement.

please post back & let us know how this turns out.

If the dye didn't go in, and the "pros" dried it unrinsed to fake success, then coating this isn't really a solution. My jumping to conclusions: they thought it was nylon microfibre, but it was polyester microfibre (different chemicals needed, and not easy).

Maybe they dyed it fine but forgot to rinse?

Properly dyed microfibre won't fade from sponging with water. Try it. If the colour stays then just sponging off the residue will save you the hassle of replacement.

Return the furniture. Dye bleed on upholstery is unacceptable. Do not attempt to clean it as it may compound problems and interfere with warranty and refund. There are many different kinds of microfiber, and not all are created equal. Too, different manufacturers use different types of fibers, dyes, and weaving processes.

Wiping it with a damp sponge could void the warranty?

i think 12pole is saying simply don't mess with it in any way or you'll be "tampering with the evidence"!!!! leave it as-is & have them come and get it!!! it's unacceptable and clearly defective.

I recently purchased a microfiber couch from "a store", and it has also started bleeding. The company is telling me that this is normal and will go away in a couple of days to a couple of weeks. I don't believe them, and I don't think I should have to put up with a couch that fades on my clothes! What can I do?!

Thanks!

insist that it's defective & return it. sofas shouldn't bleed onto your clothing. and the bleeding won't magically stop after a few days - obviously. (even if it did, wouldn't the sofa end up splotchy?) that's ludicrous. it's a manufacturer's defect. they should take it back. does the tag or your receipt say anything about a warranty? most anything is warrantied for at least a little while against manufacturer's defects. clearly the sofa was upholstered with defective (or incredibly cheap) fabric. they should at least reupholster it in a different fabric for you, if not entirely replace the piece with another one. however, they probably won't want to simply give you your money back.

legally, i'm not sure what steps you can take. there's a legal advice forum here called "Law" under the Real Estate & Finance section. you could post that question there. if the store doesn't cooperate, i'd certainly be calling the Better Business Bureau, at the very least.

P.S. out of curiosity, what color is this sofa?

It's defective
Call the store back and tell them it's bleeding onto your clothes
If the person answering the phone says that's normal, ask to speak to their supervisor
Tell them to please pick it up and refund your money
Unless you picked it up, then drop it off and ask them to refund your money
It is abolutely not "normal" for furniture to do this
It's horrible

They can't possibly stick with the "it's normal" story for long
That's preposterous
I managed a retail furniture store for years, I never heard of such a thing
If someone called me up and said there new sofa bled like that, I would have had it picked up and a refund in there hands so quick they wouldn't know what hit them
It's not like it's a sweatshirt that says on it "dyes may transfer-wash before wearing"
It's a sofa

I can't believe someone actually said that's normal
You can tell them your "cousin" or "friend from out-of-state" in the furniture business told you it's not normal and thet they should take it back

If they still refuse please post back with exactly what they say
Or send me a PM if you don't want to post that
The best next course of action depends upon what they say, and how they say it
Just remember you catch more flies with honey....

Please let us know how it turns out
