We have just purchased a new bedroom set and now that it is all in place and the bed is together, it is too tall. I need to use a stool to get into the bed. I do not want to cut any of the legs because of the wood work. Can anyone tell me if they have this problem and how to solve it.

the same thing happened to my mom, and to us, when we all got new furniture....and new MATTRESSES! the new height is due to the new thicker mattresses.
did you get a new mattress set, too?
they do make sets with thinner boxsprings called "low profile" now that are half as thick (3" versus 7") as the regular boxsprings. that will help bring the top surface of your bed down.
also, a metal bed frame holds your bedding set lower than a wood rail & slat bed does.
so, if you went from an old mattress set sitting on a metal frame, to a new wooden bed and new mattress set, yep - you're gonna need a ladder! or a cute little set of bedsteps anyway! especially if your mattress is a pillow top!!! ;)
