View Full Version : Building My own Deck

I just moved into a new house and am planning on building my own deck and fence. When the foundation was poured, I had them put in 3 pilons for the deck, and as a result, they go all the way down to the footings. I don't expect this deck to EVER shift or sink move in any way. this will be the first deck I have built on my own and I have a couple of questions.

1. How do I attach the beam (or girder) to the concrete pilons? Obviously the beam has to be parallel to the ledger boards attached to the house, and the joists will run over the beam. I plan on using 2x10's for the beam (all pressure treated, of course) and about 3 boards thick. I know hoiw to do everything else, but I'm stuck on attaching the beam. Any help you can offer would be appreciated.

2. What type of plywood is best for flooring an outdoor deck? We are planning on a vinyl flooring over the plywood base.

thanks for your help....

:D Hi
There some frost issue in your part of the country
I dont recommended attaching the deck to the house it will lift due to the frost.
There some plan available at your local lumber store how to frame your deck.
I would read it first.
I'm sure you will need more support for the deck.
As for decking i would used pressure threated lumber either
2x6 with nail space to let water run off the deck.
As for linolium i dont recommended it.
In the winter you better not used it if you don't want to break a leg or worst.
I'm sure you will need a building permit first and submit a plan to get it.

Hope this helps you.

PS if you want linolium on it get the mother in law to try it out first :D

These work great, as long as your contractor installed anchor bolts. If not, you may have to do some drilling and install some type of hit rod.
