I am installing baseboard and door trim in several rooms. The problem is that some doors have metal casings & jambs and other doors have wood casings and jambs. The metal door casings & jambs can't be removed. Can a wooden casing be installed on top of the metal casing so that all the casings are the same?

I assume a carpenter would have to alter the back side of the wood casing to match and cover the profile of the metal casing.

He could build out the thickness of the metal casing and then attach a wood casing to backer piece.

Sometimes the metal casing can be removed, if it's the type the clips on. Behind the metal casing, the metal jamb should have small oval holes. These are the spots you can nail wood casing to, if you prefer to use it instead. (I like to mark their location w/ a piece of white chalk.)

But if you take off a piece of metal casing, and you can't see any wood through those oval holes I talked about, then there's nothing to nail the inside edge of the casing to. I hate casing metal doors like that.
