Hello,

I was thinking of building a home theater in my basement. I wanted to build an elevated platform out of 2x4's and plywood across one of the walls which measures 20' across and attach it to the studs.

My question is does anyone have some generic plans or drawings that I would be able to follow to get me started? Here are the measurements again:

Platform about 3' high, 20' across, about 3' deep.

I should also mention I am just an amatuer when it comes to carpentry.

Thanks again

out of curiosity, is this platform... "about 3' high, 20' across, about 3' deep"... is it going to have shelving underneath? It sounds like you want a 20' long countertop, but what's underneath, and will anything be built on top?

Most DIY workbenches are similar to what you require, but they are only 6-8' wide.
Since most lumber and plywood comes in 8' lengths, construct 2 workbenches 8' wide and one 4' wide and connect them. You don't want to work with a single 20' object.
The 4' workbench goes in the middle where most of the support will be needed.

~Thanks for fast responses.

I was going to place a 50" wide-screen tv on the center of the platform and frame around it with 2x4's & drywall. Then I was going to frame out the areas next to that for speakers

I wasn't planning on having any shelving located underneath but wanted to have one located above the tv for my components.

The DIY workbench sounds exactly what I was looking for although I can't find plans to suit my concept.

Thanks again for the great advice.

lynchjo,

If you feel comforable with laminating formica, you could install a 2x4 frame onto the wall, screw on a particle board face, 2 layers of 3/4 industrial board on top, and laminate the whole thing. The counter would look very professional- using whatever kind of laminate you like. Perhaps your bracing underneath could line up with the supports on each side of the tv? 90" / 60" / 90" ?
