First timer to this site. Great site for do it yourselfers!

I am remodeling my basement (1960's ranch home). The Steel I-beam has two supports (each one about 1/3 of the way in from the outside walls).

For design reasons, I want to move each support about 6-8 inches closer to the outside wall so they are not just out in the middle of the floor plan (by moving them, one will be next to a wall thus easily enclosed and the other would be at the base of the steps thus easily integrated to the wall with the steps).

I don't think moving these that short of distance would affect anything, but I just wanted some feedback from people who may have more knowledge.

Any feedback would be great. Thanks

Hello and welcome to the forums.

Ok first thing STOP, don't move those post without first consulting a structural engineer. From your description it seems these are extremely important structural members of the house's framing. What you might think about is framing around them and then enclosing them with drywall which will make a more attractive column in your newly finished basement.
