Hi.
We moved into a house where the water goes through a softener, then to the furnace and cold water line, but not to the water heater. Is this strange? A schematic of out water system can be seen at http://factory-hollow.com/diy-well.bhtml. Please tell us what you think. Thanks!

If the water heater doesn't have soft water plumbed to it, then the hot water will be hard and when it is mixed wth soft cold water, the result will be hard water. So replumb the water heater with softened water. I've never heard of this before so make sure you follow the plumbing to make sure you're right that the soft water doesnt' go to the heater. I have heard of softening only the cold feed to the water haeter, which BTW, I say is a very dumb idea.
