I am about to start framing the walls in my basement, using metal studs, does anyone know what the safe distance is from wall to furnance?

Good qeustion, I framed with wood and made enough room so someone can get around the furnace for service (2' clearance). :mask:

As I recall, a metal stud wall is still treated as a combustible wall. Look inside

the outer removeable cover of your furnace. There should be one or more

data tags or decals, usually fastened to the furnace itself. If the furnace

was made in the last 20-25 yrs., one of those tags will tell you how close it

can be installed to a combustible wall. By all means, give the repair guy some

room to work and keep in mind that someday that furnace will need to come

out of there.

Code in North Carolina calls for at least 30" clearance in front of furnace for service. You may want to check with your local inspector.
