I built a 14x16 brick paver patio using 12" square pavers, used crush and run for a base with sand on top to set the stones. The project turned out great as a back patio, I sanded the joints which are about 1/2" or just a bit larger.

I knew the sand would wash out with rain, but its been ridiculous. I find myself having to fill the joints and sweep WAY more than I want to. :wall:

Any ideas of adding cement to the sand or any other way to keep the sand in place any longer?

thanks!

1/2" joints?? Plan on sanding them for a LLOONNNGG time!! Joints should have been more like 1/8" to 3/16". Eventually all of that sand will wash into the base and fill things up.

ok, they really are 1/4" joints.....and looks like the sand has settled a bit over the winter as the rain has washed some down.

Will it eventually stop, and the sand stay in the joints?

Use polymeric sand instead of regular sand.

I believe you can seal the sand with some product that will actually harden the top layer

You use masonry sand under the pavers and polymeric sand inbetween them, you spray water (according to the directions) over the polymeric sand a few times and let it dry. The sand then hardens and its a done deal.
