I need to purchase a new freezer this week (beef will be ready for pickup this weekend). I am looking at 2 models. Both are 19.7 cubic feet, which is a comparable, but slightly larger, size to my upright that went bad last fall.
FFC20C4CW (viewable on the Lowe's website) for approx $429
and
Kenmore Elite- Sears item #04614092000 Mfr. model #14092 for $599
From what I can determine there are 2 major differences:
1. Kenmore has an oil-cooled compressor vs. Frigidaire "Reduced Temperature Compressor"
2. Kenmore has a "Temperature Alarm"-- nice feature, but probably not worth $150 all by itself.
The freezer that I buy will be placed inside of an enclosed, but non-heated and non-cooled, back porch on the east side of my house (not in direct afternoon sunlight). I live in Eastern Kansas, so we have maybe 30 days per year that are 95 or above (usually with high-humidity). While not unbearably hot in the summer, it will get warmer than a basement location.
Questions that I have:
1. What value does an oil-cooled compressor add and is it worth $150 to me?
2. Are there other factors or models that I need to consider in my purchase?
3. Do you need more information?
