Can I install a foundation vent by removing a window?

Foundation vents are used to ventilate a crawl space. While I have seen

crawlspaces with windows, it's a bit unusual, as they don't serve any good

purpose. If an access is needed, a removeable hatch cover is more practical.

If we are talking about a crawlspace foundation, the vents they sell for this

purpose are the same size as a concrete block. Assuming you have a block

foundation, here's some hints. You can remove a top block to make room

for the vent, but it shouldn't be under a floor joist and it shouldn't be under

the butt-ends of the sill-plate on top of the blocks. If you can't avoid these

scenarios, go ahead and remove the block, while temporarily supporting the

joist or sill in question and install a new block (the old one always breaks)

laid on it's side (with the web cords horizontal) and leave it sticking out

into the crawl space enough to allow a vent-sized recess on the ouside

in which to install the vent. Oh, one more no-no, don't remove one of the

blocks that has the anchor bolt imbedded in it, it has a definite purpose.
