I have never used a water softener before and I just bought a house that has one. Unfortunately the previous owner did not leave a service manual. I recently noticed that the calcium in the water has increased. I opened the tank / unit and saw that no salt was in the tank. The previous owner left an 80 lb bag of salt in the basement. I put that bag of salt in the tank and now the salt is above the water level. Do I have to do anything else to make the softener work and how long before I get softer water again?

You should add 4-5 gallons of water to the brine tank and then wait at least 2 hours and then do a manual rgeneration using no water for the next 1.5 - 2 hrs during the regeneration.

You should also search for softeners and find out what brand or control valve you have and then fnd a manual for it.
