Hi all. On my last trip to Europe I noticed that many people have armored doors installed. They are standard size doors and they are solid with metal plates on both sides. The lock uses a very long key and its tongue penetrates well into the wall. Most of those doors when locked have vertical and horizontal bars that lock in place well into the frame and into the floor.
As they seem very heavy do you think they could be installed in the usual north American or Canadian home? I mean our frames on wooden house will be able to susntain them?
Also is there any place you can buy them? Here in Vancouver Canada there is none.
Thanks

Similar doors are custom made in the commercial market. Bullet resistant and blast resistant doors exist also. The "rods" = internal bolts are part of exit device door hardware. The bolts can be operated by a panic bar (as in a fire door or emergency exit) and/or various types of knobs and lever devices. Cost makes them prohibitive in the residential market.

At first thought, an armored door with cross bolts installed is appealing though after some more thought, I think the door installed in a wood frame house is much like owning a car which has indestructible/ bullet resistant/no flat tires, :alarm: installed on only one axle.

Thanks for the answers. Regarding the cost I have no idea how much these kind of doors cost here but in Europe with all the accessories they run about 600 Euros which I guess is roughly US$800. I totaly undarstand what you guys are saying but I was thinking that with some tampered windows and that kind of door you will make it kind of difficult for a burglar to break in your house.
Thanks again.
