We have recently bought a house and I recently changed the filter in the oil furnace. The filter was disgustingly dirty. Furnace is only 2 years old but doesn't look like the filter was ever changed. After changing the filter, there is much more force coming from the furnace in terms of the air flow through the floor vents- which is good. However, there is also now this very loud banging noise when the blower initially turns on and even louder when it shuts off. It is waking me at night!

Originally, we thought it was the furnace, but after some investigation, it seems to be coming from the ducts. The noise started immediately after changing the filter. What could have caused this and what can we do about it?

Thanks for any advice you can give!

It's possible that the return is undersized, but it just may be a long section that does not have a cross break in it.

You can have someone play around with the fan switch while you pinpoint where the noise is located. Sometimes you can just sheetmetal screw a strip of metal across it diagnally and it will stop.
