We have a ruud gas pack apr 15yrs old not sure of what type of ignition it uses. It runs off a propane tank (filled two weeks ago so we have plenty of gas).

The problem we are having is the air conditioning and fan work fine, however, when we turn to heat we get nothing, no fan, no heat. When we go from auto to fan the fan runs but there is no hot air. We started having intermittent problems last week. For awhile the fan would blow and nothing short of tripping the breaker would make it turn off. We called a heating/air company (a reputable one) last thursday and they said the breaker needed to be changed out so we paid $300 for them to evaluate the prob and fix the breaker. It worked great for 6 days. Then this morning I discovered the fan was working but no heat. Turned up the thermostat and the heat came on, turned down the thermostat and the heat went off but the fan stayed on. I then turned it off at the breaker to keep the fan from running too long and burning up. Now, like I said, no heat. Please help! We cant afford to have the repair guys keep coming out here.

Thanks

Have you gone out to the unit to see if the small fan is running? When you take the cover off, you will see a small fan that will "Pressureize" the burner area.. If that fan is not running, the burner will not light.

Been awhile since I've been on this unit.. Check to make sure the flame roll out switch needs to be reset.

Holy Cow! $300 bucks to change a 5 dollar breaker?

It's not going to hurt that fan to run. They are built to do that and it wont cost much either. Now the reason it stays running after the heat shuts off is either a stuck fan relay or fan/limit switch. The next time the fan is running and the heat is off, go smack the side of the furnace and see if it shuts down.

THank you,
I'm not sure on the fan, I know when I flip the breaker on there is a small fan that blows and then when we turn on the fan or air we get a louderfan blowing. I did call the company that came out last week and they said they'd send someone out and I wouldn't have to pay the diagnostic fee, that was almost $100, the breaker was $200. She said the guy recommended cleaning the heat exchange, which he did, and maybe that had something to do with it. However, I have to wonder about that since it worked fine for a week after the breaker was changed and then started doing the exact same thing. I dont know if I should be but I was wary of the $600 they charge to clean the heat exchange considering that's about a quarter of what it would cost me to replace the whole unit which we plan to do in the next year (probably at tax time next year). I'm wondering if this company is charging a little much for their services but not sure. They are a large well known company so that's why I went with them but now I'm not sure. My dad knows a little about heat/air (used to work on them in the late 60's early 70's he just can't physically anymore) so I asked him to come over when the guy gets here.

I appreciate the advice you've given me and I'll make sure to have those things checked. Hopefully it's a flip a switch to fix problem or we'll be heating with a wood stove and electric heater till next year. This stuff gets a little too expensive for us.

I would call the company back saying it's still not working after they serviced it...

wouldn't have to pay the diagnostic fee, that was almost $100,

For that cost they should have found what was wrong. call them back. With Matt wish my guys could get $200 for a new breaker out on the job.

I dont think so. Could be a dumb tech.
