We have a Dunham-Bush gas fired furnace (forced hot air) in our condo. We have only been living here for two winters, but I have gotten pretty familiar with the different sounds the furnace makes when it operates. Lately, the furnace seems to be making a lot more noise than usual (not necessarily louder, but more sporradic).

When the furnace turns ON, I can hear (and see) the burner turn ON as usual. The blower, however, seems to be turning ON much sooner in the cycle than usual. It then proceeds to turn ON/OFF multiple times in 1-2 minute intervals. In the past, I'm pretty sure the blower waited longer to turn ON, and only ran once before shutting off (for a good 5-10 minutes).

In simpler terms, the furnace is currently operating like this:

BURNER (1-2 minutes) > BLOWER (1-2 minutes) > BURNER (1-2 minutes) > BLOWER (1-2 minutes) > BURNER (1-2 minutes) > BLOWER (1-2 minutes)

Am I being paranoid? Or, is my furnace not operating properly? Is the blower really supposed to turn ON and OFF 3-4 times during a heating cycle?

Thanks in advance.

Doesn't sound to cool. May be heat anticipator in tstat if so equipped. Have you checked the filter??

Me to: Can be the board or fan limit. First is filter clean , then is coil clean? Blower wheel blades clean?
Sounds like it can be going off on limit.

From the description, it sounded to me like the blower is short cycling. If the furnace were hitting limit, the blower should stay on & the burner cycle. A little clarification, if you please, Emaziarz.

Filter is brand new and blower blades are clean. Not sure about the coils (I'd have to remove a panel to access them and don't want to do that).

Then it sounds like down to the board and fan relay. Will the blower motor stay on at fan on at the tstat???
