I have an old low-boy oil furnace. When it attempts to fire up, the fuel pump runs for about 5 minutes, the combustion chamber fills with smoke but the furnace never completely fires. It seems that it is getting hot (like an ignitor is attempting to start the firing), thus the smoke, but nothing else happens.

WHen was the last time you had a full tune/clean up on this?
Be best to call in a pro on this, and it should of shut off if there is no fire.. DO NOT hit the reset more than once, or you'll flood the heat exchanger with fuel oil.

Without knowing how old 'old' is, you would probably be better off like Jay said and have a tune up service visit performed. You will probably get a good value for your dollar because the furnace must be dirty after working at all under those conditions.

By all means, get a pro well versed in oil to work on your heater. Be sure to tell him/her (gee, aren't I getting politically correct  ) exactly what you have done & what the burner did or did not do. This is for the servicer's safety & your own.

Id say get some one to look at this right now
If you have ever seen one do this and blow up you would know what I mean. Something else here how can it run 5 minutes and not go into reset????
