I have a decent size bonus room that is over our garage that get quite a bit colder than the rest of the house. Instead of turning up the central heat, I would like to buy a space heater to keep just that room warm. Problem is, I don't know what the best to buy is. I had one of those Vornado heaters, but didn't really do the trick and was noisy. Does anyone have any suggestions of the best type of heater?

Thanks

In my opinion space heaters are unattractive and dangerous. I would suggest heavily insulating the cieling in the garage and maybe strip heaters on the exterior walls of the room.

Just not sure I want to go into the expense of putting a bunch of insulation on the garage ceiling. We would only be using it when we are in the room.

VolnTitan,

If by space heaters you mean unvented combustion types you really won't get any recommendations here on any of them.
They are a very unsafe way to heat a space regardless what the manufacturers say about them.
It is not unlawful for them to be sold but their use is banned in most states and in all of Canada.
Here is a link (http://southface.org/web/resources&services/publications/journal/sfjv403/vent-free-fireplaces.htm) to one article on this.

If you mean a different plug in electric heater like the one you tried that wouldn't work either.
The heater you used and any other heater that can plug into a normal recepticle can only be a maximum of 1500 watts.
Because it didn't work this shows you that your heat load is greater than that.
I would suggest at least 4000 watts or maybe more.
This makes the insulation that mattison recommended the best option.

Plug in heaters are the cheapest but not really the safest.

If you dont put insulation in it. Why try and heat it at all. That would be just like a heater outside and say its a room. Insulation will help you heat or cool.

I agree with Ed, it'll be cheaper to put insulation in the attic in the long run than paying to try to keep the area warm/cool.

I would suggest an electric baseboard heater if you need the extra warmth.
