I am ready to move into a 2500 square foot 2 story home with a full basement and the humidifier needs to be replaced along with the heat pump. I am also thinking about a dehumidifier. I know theire are whole house units available but am not sure about brands and options. If anyone can point me in the right direction as far as units and whether It is something that I can do myself. Thx. Don

You could do the humidifier yourself, but if you are going to be changing out the heating system. have the dealer do the whole works for you.. It'll be cheaper to do it up front than do it at a later time..

As for the whole house dehumidfire, the A/C should take care of that as long the system is sized right.

Aprilair does have a system. It's pretty new too (http://www.aprilaire.com/category.asp?id=F63D255EB0054BBF811DBB024BF068FA) and I have not seen this in person.

When you do have the system changed out. make sure they do a heat lost/gain on the house for best comfort! Don't go by "rule of thumb".

Be sure and get 3 bids for the job. You said new heat pump so there is no need for a dehumidifier. Trane has a new set up on their unit that will pull more humidity out of the home for you. It works on how the fan runs in the unit.
Have them put a new humidifier in at the same time.

The system Ed is talking about is "Comfort-R" it controls the fan speed to help dry out the house when the A/C is running.. My parents has it and been very happy with it. I just had a new Trane put in last fall, but haven't used the A/C yet.. WOn't be till May or so when we do need it.

From a pvt Msg.

Thank you for the info. I have never dealt with Trane units before but I was under the impression that they were extremely expensive. What is your opinion on theire price compared to other units.

They can be if you go into the higher end products.

I chose the Trane XV90 Furnace that has variable speed blower, along with the XR11 11SEER outdoor unit. Also had the Honeywell Media Filter system and upgrade of the VisionPro t-stat it cost me just over $4k

But the cost may depends on your area.. Some dealer maybe cheaper than others.

The important thing is that you know the installing dealer will stand behind thier work and products Dealer who sized the system right for the home, and feels comfortable with the higher end products like the varible speed system..

So ifyou do get a bid. get a few of them.

Trane/American Standard and Rheem/Ruud are good products
