Hi, i'm getting ready to tear out my old-as-heck oil fired hot water radiator heating system out of my house and i want to replace it with an oil furnace forced air heating system and Central A/C. My house is old with not much insulation except several layers of re-done cedar shingles on the outside. Large old windows downstairs that dont help either, upstairs is smaller and more insulated with less windows. Total square footage of living area is around 1900 sf. I havent had a system sized yet, but approximately what can i expect to pay for a completely new system like this? I am going to need all of the ductwork, vents, ect. also, but i was thinking of doing that part myself if i can get an idea on sizing on that also. I just would like to get a ballpark figure before i go out to a contractor.
Thanks,
Bob

Bob,
Why in heaven's name would you ever want to go from hot water to scorched air? I can certainly understand wanting to add A/C, but to discard the comfort & versitility of hot water?

The system is Reeeeaalllyyyy Oooooolllllddd, and the boiler isnt going to last very much longer (its been patched up and it looks like its going to fall apart at any moment) and it isnt very efficient right now. The old rusted pipes also have asbestos insulation on them which i plan on having removed. There are only radiators in the 3 main rooms downstairs also, and they are really old and ugly. The bedrooms have electric baseboard heat. I want to go with one central heating system.

The best thing to do is get several estimates from local well established hvac contractors. Make sure they do a heat load/loss calc to properly size the system, and make sure they do a calc to properly size the ducts. If you've never done duct work before I would reccomend leaving it to the pro's because it's very important that it's done and sized right.

When you decide on one talk to them and let them know you'de like to do some of the work to save a little money and they will let you know what you can do.

As for a ballpark cost it's impossible to give over the web.
