View Full Version : Not enough heat in Basement?

I am in the process of finishing my basement. Approx. 900sqft. It was just sheetrocked. I used r-13 Insulation with 2x4 stud wall construction. I added 4 forced air heat/air vents with one return. Currently, with the insulation and sheetrock up, Its still realtively cold down there...approximately 6 degrees cooler than upstairs where the thermostat is.. THis is not much different than it was prior to the insulation and sheetrock...

I still have two doorways open into unfiinished side, but I'm hoping that when the carpet goes down it will help to cut down cold? Any experience with this would help... If not, I may need to go back and consider hardwired baseboard heat...but now I'm sure it will cost more..

Thanks

Hanging those 2 doors sure should help. If you have an open stairwell (no

door at top or bottom) this will act like a chimney and carry the heat to the

main level. Is your furnace adequately sized to handle the additional sq.

footage? Most newer furnaces are just big enough to handle the finished

space available when the furnace was installed.(they operate more efficiently

that way)

I did the same thing in a basement I recently finished. I found once I adjusted some of the vents up stairs, I found a good compromise that allowed me to have warm rooms throughout the house. Putting on the additional doors will certainly help too.

Like said you have to play around with the registers here. close some down a little upstairs . This will help put more heat down in the basement for you . this is no loss to the home as it will help warm the floors and go up stairs anyway. Some also wire the furnace blower in on low speed. So when the furnace burners are not on the blower run in low 24/7 .

Concrete floors are porous and can be very cold. Hopefully, you're putting down a really good pad (at least) before the carpet is laid?

Anyway, count your blessings. You could be living in Minnesota!
Good luck.

Just hope you put a outside air intake right there in the hearth.???? Like the ceiling . Only way to go down there.

yes, the wall on the left side is an outside wall, so up and out I went.
