I have a question for all the professionals out there...

I'm in the process of installing a new Heat-n-glo Corner-TVFL B-vent gas fireplace in my basement family room. I currently have an unused chimney that I plan on running 6" flex vent down. The flex vent will come out the side of the chimney and connect to my rigid vent from the fireplace unit. Here's the question...in the install paperwork, it's stated that you can not come off the fireplace with a 90 degree elbow. You must either: 1) go 4' verticle, then use a 90 degree elbow; or 2) Use a 45 deg elbow, then use at minimum, 4' of rigid prior to connecting to another elbow. So, I'm wondering why it's necessary to use the 4' of verticle prior to using an elbow? I plan on butting the fireplace right up to the chimney, and would like to use a 90 deg elbow right off the fireplace, then use 2' of rigid venting to the chimney (for a total of 2' horizontal venting), and 20' of flex up to the top of the chimney.

The driving force behind doing it like this is so the fireplace can be open (hence, opening up the room a little bit) above it.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance!
