If you don't treat the iron bacteria or any other type of bacteria in your water and just use a softener,will your water softener or resin be damaged
somehow? Can you get away with just a water softener if you have a certain amount of bacteria?

Yes, reducing type bacteria colonize a resin bed and create H2S like odor and decrease capacity. You have to kill the bacteria before it enters the equipment; filter or softener.
