should i screw the sheetrock into the floor joists or should i tack up some 1x4's on the joists and then sheetrock into the 1x4's? i was planning on going straight into the joists but i saw a friends construction project in his basement and he used teh 1x4's. just wonderng what would be best.

If you have a modern house, the joists will be 16'' on center. Some

engineered joists may be 24'' o.c. These all lend themselves to nailing

direct to joists. Some old houses(not usually the kind with a ''finishable''

basement) have odd spaced joists where furring strips would be called for.

Usually, these strips are used in older houses to fasten accoustical tiles

to joists. I would use the joists if possible and use strips of plywood and

drywall screws to join the butt-ends from the top side.
