I have two York furnaces in my attic, one for the upstairs and the other for the downstairs.

The downstairs furnace keeps acting up. A month ago it wouldn't kick in. Checked the breaker, check the thermostat, etc. I finally called a technician out and he tried to tell me it was the themostat. I agrued with him and he did more searching and found that a wire from the furnace to the thermostat was bad. He replaced the bad wire and everything worked after that.

It's been working fine since then, but today I noticed that it was just blowing cold air. I checked the thermostat and that's working (had it set to auto). I went up to the unit and took the cover off and noticed that the furnace wasn't lit, but the fan was blowing. I also noticed that a red light on the curcuit board labeled "STATUS" is blinking.

Does anyone know what the blinking status light indicates?

Also, the unit is lit by a hot surface ignition switch.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Most of the time the light flashes X amount of time, and that tells you what is wrong..

Most of the time, the code will be on the back side of the blower door w/ the system's wire drawing. Take a look there and see if they tell you.

Jay -

Thank you for the prompt reply. I went in the attic, located the diagnostic code legend and had my wife turn the unit on. The status light began blinking 3 times which according to the legend means "The pressure switch failed to close".

I know computers, not furnaces. What now?

Thanks again for all your help!

Is the exaust blower running? If so you could try pulling the clear rubber tube off of it and blowing it out. If this don't work you should probably call a pro since you could have an obstruction in the flue pipe.

It was free and clear of any obstructions.

Any other suggestions before I call in the pros? :wall:

Just for a short time. have you tried to remove the flue pipe at the furnace and see if it works?

Otherwise, the inducer maybe going weak on you.

I took the flue off, but it made no difference.

I have called the pros and they'll be out tomorrow to look at it...

Thanks for all of the help, I appreciate it!

Thanks to everyone who gave me tips and pointers.

I called in a technician and he was in and out in 5 minutes. Apparently, the obstruction was in the exhaust blower and apparently the previous owner had remedied it in the past.

The technician found what looked like a broken radio antenna on the top of the unit (I used it to unlock the latches on the door) and he removed the rubber hose from the exhaust blower and poked it in the male connector and worked it around until it felt free of any build-up. He explained that carbon can build up over time and it's common to clog this connector. He put the hose back on and turned the unit on. It's been running like a dream ever since.

It was a $50.00 lesson, one I don't feel bad about. He said it would cost 120.00 to have him take it apart to clean it... He said I could do it if I were careful to seal it back up properly.

What do you folks recommend? Any words of wisdom or words of caution?

Thanks again,

Good deal!

I would just make it a check on my fall maintenance to make sure it is clear before start up. Maybe poke through there 1/2 way through the season just to be sure.
