In the last 12 years, I have had 1 washer and 2 dryers go bad. It has been a different problem every time. Yet I hear story after story of people who bought their appliances over 20 years ago and they're still going strong.
I'm starting to think that the manufacturer's standards have gone down. I'm having problems with my current dryer that would probably cost $120 in parts and several hours of my time to fix. Yet based on my own experience I'm hesitant to buy a new one that will die in 4 years. I can buy a refurbished one for $100-$150.
In the experience of the pros, have modern washers and dryers turned to poo?

The average life of a major appliance: washer, dryer, refrigerator, is 12 years. In general, mine have lasted longer than that. The dryers have had to have replacement heater coils, but nothing more. I have found that the major brands tend to hold up well.

Hi coryengel,
- I do believe that many items are not built as well as they were 20 years ago. However, a lot also depends on a number of factors like increased use, quality of water, and method of use. Really speculation, and what can we do about it anyway ?
Do it Right -Do it once.
