When I start the dryer, it generally hums for a few seconds (like an electric motor that is trying to run against too much resistance), and then shuts off. After it shuts off, it won't turn on again. I wait a few minutes and hear a little click, and then it will work again. It sometimes will run empty if I give it a little start, but it seems to be getting worse. The last time I did it there was a subtle smell which, though minor, sent a clear message. That message was "hey moron, you better knock this off before you burn up your motor".
This sounds to me like (a) a bad motor or (b) something else that is putting resistance on the motor and will eventually kill it. The short periods of inactivity seem to be the dryer giving itself a chance to cool off.
What do the experts think?
