Help please. To start the cycle - Outside unit not working. I hit reset button, outside unit turns on, heats house fine. After 6 hours or so (not related to temp outside either, can be 50 or 39 degrees) outside unit stops working and auxillary heat kicks in. I then have to manually hit reset button outside again to start outside unit working. I have been heating my house with auxillary heat all through this season I believe and didn't know it! Just moved to new home in NC, never had heat pump. Can anyone give any suggestions as to what might be wrong? Also, when the auxillary is working the "inside" fan runs constantly until I hit off (it is running cool air).

Thanks for replying. Copper pipes hot when running. High head rubber tipped reset button. New filter in it. Outdoor fan runs when heating or unit running outside.. How do I know if it needs freon? Can I check myself? Thanks.

If its high head. First is why-- fliter dirty?? Inside coil dirty? Blower wheel dirty not blowing like it should. the cupped blades have dirt in them on the blower??
Dont know about freon yet and no you cant check it. Have to find out why high head here first.

Hey
I live in NC and I went to a call the other night they had a ruud heat pump. I know the houses in that development are all 2.5 ton heatpumps but this one had a 3 ton heatpump installed in its place but the duct work was not changed to fit a 3 ton system. I just got them some strip heat and reset the pressure switch. I told my boss about the house and he said that the home owner wanted to put a used unit in there and he said that he would have nothing to do with it. So I hope that it is not you.
But with all that to say there are alot of things to be considered when diagnosing a heatpump.

I do live in Wilmington, Ogden. This am tried to reset the "high presure control reset switch" and outside unit kicked on, smelled hot, and fan didn't work, didn't kick on. So I guess I need to contact repair tomorrow. Thanks for input.

When the condenser Fan dont run for sure you will hit high head. You might try and when the unit comes on give the fan blades a hard push or spin like. If it takes off and runs then you might only need a new capacitor for the fan motor.
