Kenmore will pump, wont drain

3-5 year old Kenmore/ whirlpool direct drive washer will not drain but does pump and recirculate water back into drum during drain test. Please help. The controller has been possesed since purchased requiring me to unplug it overnight to reset. Did not work this time. Is it the drain valve or expensive controller?
