I am working on a couple of woodworking jigs (crosscut sled, and tennoning jig) and it calls for UHMW plastic to use as miter track slides. The prices of this material are more than I want to spend. Does anyone have any suggestions of other materials I should or should not use?

Check in the cookware section of your local grocery store. Many cutting boards are made of UHMW plastic that can be cut into whatever piece you need.

I have had luck using hard maple and waxing it, too.

I also needed some plastic once, and went to a local dealer that specializes in that sort of thing. I told them what I was doing and they ended up giving me all sorts of small scraps that they would have otherwise thrown away. Mostly nylon. I was looking for phenolic, but they were out. I'd go to a similar place and beg. I'm not above begging if it will get me something for free. ;)
