I am considering adding jack supports 2.5' in from each side of a 14' wide room so that I can remove an existing post in the middle of the beam. The support beam is a 8" x 4" steel I-Beam. This would change the span from 7' to 9'. Is there any guidance on repositioning basement posts

Well, there might be one consideration you have not thought of.
The posts holding the I beam up are normally set in a footer.
Then the basement floor is poured around them.
You cant really move the support post from a footer pad, to the floor. The floor itself is not designed to carry the load.
I guess you could cut the floor and dig down and pour a footer, but that dosnt sound like a do-it-yourselfer job.
The beam itself might also need to be changed for the increased length it has to support, but again, I dont know to much about that....
I normally leave the calculations to the Pro's.
