Our kitchen cabinets were hand built from 3/4 inch finish grade plywood. They were stained. After many years, the cabinets have dark areas and are looking pretty bad. Is there a quick way to rejuvenate them or must they be totally sanded and refinished?

If cleaning looks to be an option, you could just scrub them with coarse cloths and mineral spirits to remove all the grease, grit, and grime. If the remaining finish is simply dull, a fresh coat of finish will perk up the shine.
If the overall appearance is such that simply cleaning them isn't enough, you can strip, stain, and finish; or paint them. Refacing them with new veneer and new doors can be an option, too.
New stain or paint will change the overall effect the cabinets have on the appearance of the kitchen, so you might want to step back and consider how this affects your feelings on the kitchen as a whole.
Hope this helps.
