Hello,

Red Oak hardwood floor from 1915, recently sanded/refinished in 2003 is splintering in some areas (mostly occuring where boards butt together). Is there an alternative method to repair this damage or maybe even bonding the wood splinters down to avoid totally refinishing the floor again?

Sincerely,
Ken S.

My guess is you sanded one to many times. Most flooring I have seen coming from the early 1900's was 1/2" rather than the 3/4" that is used now. Great flooring and a lot of character but you are limited on how many times you sand it. What is happening is the grooves are starting to break. You could try glueing them down. A little wood glue and put some weight on top until dry and they should stay down pretty well. That is really your only option, other than replacing the wood.
Look at the bright side. That floor lasted almost one hundred years. Show me something else that will last that long and I'll buy it. If you replace it, your kids kids won't have to replace it.
Good luck
Bryan
