My log lighter pipe is installed with the gas holes facing the back of the fireplace. It seems to me that they should be facing up. So now the gas/flame blow sideways first then obviously go up. Is this the correct installation? Shouldn't the gas/flame flow directly up?

furoius, Welcome to the DIY Forums.
The reason for the orientation being to the back is so ash and other debris does not fall into the holes and block the pipe. Thats what would happen if they were facing upwards. Good luck.
