I am starting to remodel my basement and the current floor supports consist of 8x8x16 inch cement blocks. Currently the beam is made up of 2 2x12's pine. My plans are to add a 12" strip of flashing and 1/2 " plywood along with another 2x12 to make up the beam. Floor joists are at 16" on center. Above the area I plan on doing this in is my bedroom and living area. My question is: With the new beam in place what would be my minimum and maximum spacing. I plan on using schedule 40 4" pipe for columns. The current columns are placed at 6' on center which I believe is serious overkill.

Doc Dave,

Currently the beam is made up of 2 2x12's pine.

As you said the 6' spacing between columns may seem overkill but with the beam as it is, it is necessary and was designed that way.

The issue of what you need can only be determined by the total load of the beam. What is needed is the total depth of the home, one or 2 story, where this beam falls in relationship to exterior bearing walls. These factors must be known before knowing if you can procede with your idea. I would suggest calling a professional first before you attempt this.

Hope this helps!

The beam runs 62'. The area I want to do this work in has no load bearing walls. This is a one story home. There is one wall that is load bearing but I planned on leaving the block supports there. I guess what I really want to know is that is 10' to far a span?

It totally depends on what the beam is supporting. This means what is above, what size, where is it relative to the exterior bearing walls, etc.

You need the help of an engineer.
