I am working on a new solid cherry bathroom cabinet. after applying 2 coates of "cherry" minwax stain, the color is not the way I desired. I then took a sample piece of wood, applied the same two coats ..........then applied a sikkens burgandy color stain, then a minwax red oak ontop again. The color is the beautiful rich - deep "burgandy" I desired.

I plan to coat when I am done.

The sikkens stain is water based, the minwax is oil based. Will it separate if I allow a long enough drying time? Is this all a bad idea? Is there anything else to add to the minwax to get more color out?

thanks

Kevin

There should be no problem with the alkyd and water base, but there must be plenty of time for each to dry thoroughly. Congratulations on mixing the color that you wanted.

Well, no help from sikkens corp. Customer service said we dont test on minwax products, and I was the first one in the country to ever want to do this.....Yea right! So they said your on your own.

I am proceeding....full cabinet ahead....will advise...when completed.

To desire the deep, rich, even color is only done through aniline dyes which is a sprayed on process.

Grand finale: went with sikkens on minwax anyway. It looked great. Overall spray satin polyurethane. Turned out as... Freddy Boom Boom Washington use to say......dyno....mite!

Now I will say a few prayers and hope it never peels.

Good day all and thanks for being there!
