I wanted to check if this is okay.

I have a 3-car garage that is lit by a single light bulb.
I'd like to replace it with 2-3 eight foot lights.
The questions I have:
- Can I hang the lights off chains attached to the vertical ceiling beams?
(the ceiling is open, with all the studs in plain sight)

- Can I run Romex cables between each light, or do I need BX?
(the current light is run with BX from the house wall to a box in the middle of the garage)

- Do I need any special grounding for the fluorescents?

Yes, maybe (depends on local code), and no. You don't need "special" grounding for fluorescents, but they may not come on reliably without grounding. Also if it gets very cold in your garage, they may not come on well in the winter unless you buy cold-weather fixtures.

I did not think the local code (LA area) requires protecting the wires in an elevated setting.

But it would be more consistent to use matching BX, just to be on the safe side.
Can I just fit romex inside some BX coating?
