I'm installing a 6" ID stainless steel flex liner to attach to a fireplace insert.
I bought the insulation kit (1/2" ceramic blanket with foil wrap) for the liner as well. The existing chimney crock is 9 3/4" sq ID which leaves about 2 inches all around the insulated liner, not to mention the void above the damper plug.
The chimney is 18 ft tall about 6 ft of which runs through an unheated attic crawl space.
My question is...
Would it be worthwhile to fill the remaining void in the chimney crock with Thermix or some other pour-in insulation or is this overkill? Also would the Thermix mess up the insulation wrap on the liner and possible lead to corrosion?
Thanks for your thoughtful consideration.
